Sand and Cement Screed

Sand and cement screed is a traditional, hard-wearing solution used to create a smooth, level base ready to receive final floor finishes such as tiles, timber, vinyl, or carpet. It remains one of the most versatile and cost-effective screeding options for both domestic and commercial applications.

Typically mixed at a ratio of sharp sand to cement, the screed is prepared either on-site or via a screed pump to ensure consistency and efficiency. It can be installed in a variety of applications, including bonded (applied directly onto a prepared concrete substrate), unbonded (laid over a damp-proof membrane), or floating (installed over insulation), depending on the project requirements.

At Bristol Flooring & Screeding Ltd, we ensure all substrates are properly prepared prior to installation, including cleaning, priming, and the installation of damp-proof membranes where required to prevent moisture ingress. Our team carefully sets levels and uses screed rails and levelling techniques to achieve an accurate, even finish throughout.

For added strength and to minimise shrinkage and cracking, we can incorporate reinforcement such as polypropylene fibres or steel mesh. This is particularly beneficial in areas subject to heavier loads or where underfloor heating systems are installed.

Sand and cement screed is ideal for projects where falls need to be formed, such as wet rooms, bathrooms, and drainage areas, as it can be precisely shaped during installation. It is also well-suited for areas where floor levels need to be built up or adjusted.

Drying times will vary depending on thickness and site conditions, but as a general guide, traditional screed dries at approximately 1mm per day. We always advise on appropriate curing times before final floor coverings are applied to ensure long-term performance.
